The Walls Have Eyes

When I am out with camera in hand, I walk with my eyes. I find walls covered with graphics and eyes that seem to be peering back at me.

This series of images are the walls with eyes. While I use my eyes to scan the wall graphics...the wall seems to be scrutinizing me. Their eyes stare out at the viewer through multiple layers of paint daring you to solve the puzzle they present. We all have heard the expression that eyes are the windows to the soul...and what do these walls see in all that pass by.

Wall Art Angled

As you drive around town you may be aware of various building walls that are adorned with artwork.  Some of the wall artwork is fading and others are being replaced with new.

To enjoy this type of art, you have to be prepared to be observant as you move about the town.   Some of it is visible from the road and some is hidden on side streets and back alleys.  You might call it art scavenger hunt.

There is a rhythm to some of this artwork, which in some cases may require a different perspective when filling your picture space.  Maybe only a section of the artwork strikes you dramatically.  It can be an exercise in taking a few minutes to examine your subject from different angles.   I have begun to look and photograph some of this wall art from an angled perspective in-order to capture a sort of rhythm to the images.  Rather than shooting straight on -choosing to shoot close and upward or downward gives the art some motion and a different viewpoint to the original wall art.

Do walls talk? Maybe the walls around Exit 270 do whisper to some of us. I find it hard to pass a wall covered in graphics without photographing it. Each wall tells a story and I guess it is up to the viewer to decipher what that story is.  Some may look at it as crude graffiti -and others realize it is a new wave of art that exploded on to the scene in the late 1960's.  However, this social subculture has been around for several decades.  Images shot using 24mm and 35mm lens mounted on Sony Nex7 camera.
