Tell Me a Story

We are all familiar with the phrase...”a picture is worth a 1000 words”, the question I propose is...can a single photograph really tell a story?

Is there something unique about an image that stands out, whose content radiates outward...in other words does it speak to you emotionally?  Does it tease you when examining its contents?   In this post I present you with 5 images, which I pull a story out of...but you may see a different story.

The image below does not require an explanation...it is simply a photo of someone demonstrating against guns.  However, if you look at the young man standing next to the girl you will notice he is wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, which denotes rebellion.  Also another close look and you see a small button on his chest, which gives you a hint of what his political views are.  The football image in the background…is this a person who was killed in a school massacre?

This comical image leaves you with a question.  Why is there a toilet sitting outside a house on a suburban street?  Are the neighbors who obviously have to pass by this object every day, happy with this street decoration?

The little girl standing in front of a picture in a museum leaves you with a question can she read the words and what may she be thinking about what she is seeing.  Also, you may be thinking where are her parents and what question she may be about to ask them and how will they explain it?

Viewing the image below of the two people in the restaurant window has several things going on.  The woman is wearing a ring on her left hand and therefore we can assume she is married to the man in the photo.  The man appear to be in heavy thought, while the woman who has caught the photographer taking the shot is giving the photographer a disapproving look.  She also looks like she is in control of this discussion and he is thinking about what she has just told him.  Also, this is obviously a beer and wine place, but they are drinking bottled tea?

The final picture may leave you with a little sadness...the young man sitting on the curb with his backpack and pair of sneakers by his side.  Is he homeless?  Because he is sitting with his head down in his hands...he appears tired and maybe a little down on his luck.   Another feature of this image is the images of Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison on the wall behind the boy...both are musicians with sad life endings...and the peace symbol in the window are the images of another time… sort of adds to the melancholy of this image.
