The Chiaroscuro Effect

I basically see the scene as a whole and then dissect it into its separate parts...choosing which parts excite my eyes.  It can be the simplicity of the lines or simply the light falling on the subject that seems to extract it from the scene.  Like most photographers…I follow the light.

In this series of photographs the question you might ask is the item in the image the focal point or is it the light?  You might call it the Chiaroscuro effect, an Italian term that refers to intense contrast of light and dark in art.  So, the question remains, what is the main subject of these images?

Mary's Garden

Recently while visiting some dear friends/family I was told to take a stroll through their garden while dinner was being prepared.   After such a long period of somewhat isolation due to the pandemic, it was a refreshing chance to feel the warmth of the sun and the visual soothing of greener.

With a camera in hand I proceeded to explore.  The pictures that follow are the things that caught my eye as I walked about the area.  Much of the garden is devoted to growing vegetables, but there was one small rose blooming that caught my eye.

It was wonderful to just let my eyes wonder and capture the things that seemed to be hidden.  Among the many items sitting around waiting to be discovered was some plaster frogs, an old watering can and hanging mobile.  Sometimes you don’t have to go far to find interesting subjects to photograph, they could be right in your own backyard.  So, welcome to my exploration of Marys garden.   Spring has arrived and it will soon be in bloom.

DARK

Dark photography can be described as the art of making photos that are moody in style.   The photographs use a strong contrast between light and dark…with deep shadows that allows the viewers mind to fill in the gaps.

In this series of dark photography, while I am only the messenger -the viewer through interpretation of the images becomes the author of these one frame stories.  So welcome to these fragmented images of the dark side of photography.

Images were made using window light with some being multiple composures in Photoshop.

Camera used Sony A7II.  I can be reached at nymacc@gmail.com

The Poetry of Light

This post is dedicated to Light.  It is a series of photographs that captures the feeling of light as it casts itself upon various objects.  The mundane everyday objects become vivid and come alive visually.

It is simplicity of visual observation and exploration of how it envelops objects in its path.  It paints a picture of what is before us by manipulation of the light.

In my case it is an ability to find uniqueness in a subject -something maybe others overlook.   The light talks to me…so, welcome to my light poetry.
