Standing Still

Standing in my backyard, I practiced just being still for a brief period observing my surroundings.  I was in my still point standing in one spot and meditating visually.  Although I had taken a camera out with me, it remained silent as I visually dissected the scene before me.

I was slowly allowing my eyes to travel across a series of tile roofs of neighboring houses.   While each of us might view this scene differently and photograph it as whole images of houses, I found myself breaking it up into a series of sections.  What I saw was lines dissecting lines, shapes and light dissolving into shadows.  What I was looking at was a series of abstractions each forming an individual image.  It was at this point that I picked up the camera and began recording these fragments of images.

You might think of this as a process of discovery that becomes an endless source of creativity.  I like to think of it as the art of being still...a sort of still point where your eyes begin to build a series of photographs on the canvas in your mind.

Urban Lines

In art the line is one of the basic tools used by the artist to control the viewer's eye. It can be used to indicate form as well as movement within the form.

Architecture is where the line is most commonly obvious to the eye.  It is subtle in the landscape and the buildings that occupy it.  You have to look to see triangles, squares, and octagons outside and within these structures.

In this series of architectural images I have chosen concentrate on the various shapes and to use them abstractly.  You might say I have filled my camera frame with lines moving in all directions.

The Art of Seeing

Photography to me is an exploration into the world around me, and a curiosity about the small things that I come in contact with.  This curiosity fluctuates between fantasy and reality.  I think creativity is a process of turning the ordinary into sometime visually interesting.  It is seeing things around you differently -you immerse yourself in visual design -light and shape are variables you visually try to control with the preconceived concept that resides within your mind.  While I am the first to say there are no rules to art or creativity.  There are four rules I follow -look, observe, compose and capture.  Photography is not just recording what you see - but conveying what you feel and want others to see.  

The Line

I am always attracted to the lines which makeup the shape and form of the image before me or even in my thought processes.  I use the line and light often as sometimes the main subject of my image.   The challenge is to take the horizontal and vertical lines within a subject and make them the main focal point of the composition.
